It is that time of year we gather around the table with friends and family. As we celebrate this joyous holiday season, it is important to take a moment and reflect on the less fortunate in our community.
Need. Need surrounds us through the people we come in contact with every day. No one is exempt from having a need.
Yes, the Christmas Season is a wonderful time of year to consider the needs of those surrounding us and to give back, and we will do that, but the Charity Newsies organization doesn’t concentrate its efforts solely on one time of the year; it focuses on families in need the entire year.
For 82 years, the Newsies have responded to the needs of this county. Last year, the Charity Newsies provided 400+ families with food supplies during the Holiday season. A meal has a special way of bringing families together; we fed the need. In August of last year, we clothed 800+ kids and provided them with school supplies; we fed the need. If tragedy should suddenly strike the families of this county, the Charity Newsies will be onsite, ready to respond and feed the need. This trend of serving our community that has been established over the years will continue into 2019.
How is it possible for countless needs by multiple families to be continuously met? The answer is one small word with one big impact – “You.” Families are fed and clothed, children and teenagers are equipped with school supplies that will ultimately help them receive an education, and hope is provided to this community because of “You.” Your generous giving has proven that “You” genuinely care about the people that make up this city we call home.
To those who do not know much about the Charity Newsies, I wanted to take a moment and introduce you to this generous group of people. The Charity Newsies is made up of 100+ Lancaster-Fairfield Volunteers with one goal – “One Hundred Percent for Charity!” We voluntarily serve and we financially give to impact those within our borders. Every penny donated is given to a local family with children. Every donation is farmed out to those in our county, the hurting and hopeless in our city. The Newsies members pay annual dues to cover administrative expenses of the organization. There is no overhead and no salaries. Many of our team members personally cover various expenses, so we can continue to carry out our mission – “To give hope to Fairfield County families in need through one hundred percent giving to charity.”
When you partner with one of our fundraising endeavors, you give hope and you too, feed the need. Even though there are endless needs to be met, we are a community blessed with charity-minded business people and leaders willing to make a difference in the lives and futures of people. People are the heart of Lancaster, Ohio. If the heart is strong, our city will be strong.
You might be wondering how you can get more involved. There are two exciting upcoming fundraisers in December that will provide you with an opportunity to give back and feed the need.
On Thursday, December 6th, the Charity Newsies will be hosting our 48th Annual Sports Auction at Moose Lodge in Lancaster, Ohio. This is our highest grossing fundraiser used to help families in Fairfield County. Come and make a bid that will make an impact!
On Saturday, December 8th, look for the red coveralls! The men and women of the Lancaster-Fairfield County Charity Newsies will be standing at the store fronts and in the roadways of Fairfield County “hawking” their “Special Edition Lancaster-Fairfield County Charity Newsies Newspaper.” Thank you to the Lancaster Eagle Gazette for partnering with us for this fundraising endeavor since 1936.
Enthusiasm is contagious. I’m often amazed at what a couple of dollars for a newspaper can do! I encourage you to connect your family to giving. As you gather around the table, share about your experiences in giving back and how your family helped meet the needs of people who surround you every day. Kindness and generosity are attributes we are responsible to pass on to the next generation. The future of our community depends on it.
Thank you to every volunteer, local grocer, merchant, business, family, and community leader for giving of your time and energy. Whether boxing food, delivering items procured by donations, working at the golf outing, hawking papers, collecting donations, or financially supporting the Charity Newsies, you give back with a smile and make our community a better place!
Michael F. Purcell II is president of Charity Newsies.
