Maya Yoshida has vowed to donate one percent of his salary to the Saints Foundation for the season ahead, and plenty of Southampton fans have heaped praise on the defender.
The Japan international’s pledge was revealed on Wednesday evening, and as the news of his generosity flooded social media, messages of appreciation freely surfaced among the Saints fan-base.
Yoshida is now in his eighth season as a Southampton player, and it seems that, if not already, he is cementing his status as a cult hero at St Mary’s Stadium. Several fans seem to agree…

Yoshida is a perfect professional and an exceptional role model. He has displayed loyalty to the club in recent years despite failing to nail down a starting place on a consistent basis and appears to be totally committed to the cause.
He has acted as a dependable rotational option for each of the managers he has worked under since his move to Southampton in 2012 and looks set to continue in a similar role throughout Ralph Hasenhuttl’s first full season on English soil.
Football itself pales into insignificance when the positive actions of Yoshida are put into context, though. The experienced defender is, as he put it, giving back to not just the club, but the city of Southampton itself, and his efforts will undoubtedly go some way in helping the community.
Yoshida deserves the influx of appreciation that his promises of year-long donation have received. Hopefully, more Saints players will follow suit.
