LAKEWOOD, CO – Lakewood’s Action Center plans to distribute more than 5,200 Thanksgiving meals at the JeffCo stadium on Sunday, Nov. 18, the agency announced.
The 50-year-old human-service nonprofit organization, which just completed a successful $1 million rebuilding campaign, will bring back its annual Thanksgiving distribution for 1,400 households in a “convenient, drive-thru manner,” the organization said in a press release.
While clients wait in their warm cars, more than 400 volunteers will load up each family with a food box that contains the “fixin’s” of a traditional Thanksgiving meal: Potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, gravy, and dessert mixes, as well as a gift voucher for a turkey or ham at local grocery stores.
Serving families in their cars is more efficient and “adds a level of respect and dignity for each participant,” a statement said.
The annual Thanksgiving meal distribution is conducted in partnership with Colorado Community Health Alliance and Physician Health Partners.
Nearly one in nine Coloradans (11.5 percent) are struggling financially, the agency said. “For many, providing a warm Thanksgiving meal for their family may mean making a decision between paying for basic necessities and providing a holiday meal.”
“We know that the holiday season can quickly become overwhelming and we hope that our Thanksgiving Distribution program can alleviate some of the financial burdens that accompany the holidays,” said Executive Director, Pam Brier, in a press release.
The distribution will take place at JeffCo Stadium 500 Kipling St. from 9 a.m. -2 p.m.
