High school hair accessories are now high fashion

We’re barely into a month of international fashion weeks, premiering wears for next autumn/winter, but there’s already a clear hair trend dominating the runways: throwback hair accessories.

Sure, we spotted scrunchies last season, and the A-list have been wearing 90s barrettes and pins for a while, but now we’re talking full-on high school vibes; from jumbo claw clips to those stretchy hair combs that gave you a headache. Brace yourselves.

It started at Tom Ford, where models wore thick leather headbands. Seasoned stylist Orlando Pita explained to Bazaar backstage, “I want the girls to look as if they’ve done the hair themselves, so I whipped their hair back and pinned it, wrapped the band around the head, and left a little ‘mullet’ out the back, as if they’d left it out by mistake.” Literally as you did in Year Nine.

Against the grungy smoky eye and heavy ear candy, it looked effortlessly chic. Should you be tempted, try these textured versions from Kitsch. They may not be Tom Ford, but we won’t tell.

Next came the claw clip at Alexander Wang, a look courtesy of Redken’s creative director Guido Palau.

“I love the way that something that’s been around and has a funny connotation can come back,” he explained. “Look at the mullet haircut: three or four years ago it was a no-no, and now it’s super cool. I love the way that something is reintroduced into fashion and we look at it again in a different way.” We sure are.

While the catwalk versions came in chrome silver, stamped with Wang’s logo, you can–of course–pick one up at Boots. Try the Scünci No Slip Grip jaw clips to bring the look to life.

Over at Prabal Gurung’s show, stylist Anthony Turner got the memo and raised the bar, to involve stretch hair combs. Remember those?

“Every morning, I see these cool girls in London going to yoga. I was in love with their hair,” Turner said backstage. “I thought, we should put a ‘yoga bun’ on the runway,” which he then accessorised with a stretchy comb headband. “It’s kind of throwback but it’s so useful that I think it’s really cool.”
